The Mystery Of Search Engine Optimization
Is SEO Still Relevant?
There are some pundants in the internet marketing crowd that will tell you that on-page search engine
optimization or SEO is a subject for 2007 and before and is no longer a concern for most web marketing efforts.
Nothing could be further from the truth.
Marketing on the web is a moving target and Google changes the rules all the time on what things are more
relevant on the web and what things are less relevant.
On-page SEO Factors
On-page SEO is the practice of making sure that the subjects called keywords that are relevant to your business
are present on your web pages. Not jumbled into one page but strategically spread across an array of web pages so
that each page is focused on one subject.
Google considers each page to be a web site in itself. Each page should have a theme. A theme is one subject
with one primary keyword phrase and other related keyword phrases mixed in to the content of the page for an higher
page rank and quality score.
Most importantly, don't try to just implement the math of what is stated here. If you do that, your site will be
filled with pages that look like a robot wrote them. Writing pages that accomplish your SEO goals and keeps
the visitor interested take practice to master.
If you try this yourself, understand that you will get it wrong 9 times and get it right 1 time - the 10th time.
Or, you can bring in an expert that will get it right the first time. It all depends on your resources - the most
important of which is time.
This can get confusing rather quickly but when done right, can yield a barage of traffic that can win you and
your business sustainable top rankings on search engines.
Off-page SEO Factors
Ranking the pages of your site required more than just well structured pages and great content. Google looks at
something above what most search engines consider to be important. That is referential integrity. This is done
using links or anchor text. Links are the highlighted and many times underlined words on a web page that you can
click on. Imagine if there were no links.
The web would be just a huge collection of pages that are completely unrelated. Therefore, links are very
important part of the web experience and Google knows this. Going out on the web and finding sites that rank well
in Google and adding your site as a link from those sites is a very important part of an SEO strategy.
